I had grown very familiar with FM19 and the additional time meant that I was able to apply hexagonal theories and create a different style of play that I became very pleased with. Then came the point where I had done everything I wanted. Nothing was keeping me interested any more.

It was time to move on.

FM 21.

After getting used to a few changes to the interface I spent a lot of time experimenting with tactics. I knew I wanted at least one striker. My most enjoyable saves have always involved getting forwards scoring bundles of goals. Defensively most of the time FM sorts itself out. As long as you are not leaving huge gaps as your team improves and your players improve the opposition back off, attacking you less. I want to get the front line firing.

I should also note that for a future project I have been researching the highest scoring teams in the last 25 years. The highest scoring league tally belongs to Jose Mourinho’s 2011-12 Real Madrid with 121 strikes. That particular side was characterised by extremely rapid attacking, lethal counter attacks and being a threat from crosses/set pieces. My preference has always been for teams to attack at speed and watching Real hammered this home.

Play forward quickly. Establish position in the opposition half and play from there. The team should have a higher proportion of possession than the opposition, but not because they are careful with the ball, but because they are excellent at regaining possession. Pressing would have to be a part of the playing style.

On my FM19 saves I had really enjoyed using a 4-2-3-1. This also tied in with Jose’s Real Madrid who used a 4-2-3-1, the front four staying relatively high to start counter attacks. This four also enabled counter pressing with the midfield two providing natural cover.

I knew my basic shape and core concepts. The first week of FM21 was spent experimenting and working out how best to combine these ideas.

Attempt 1 – Brentford

The first dip into the game was essentially taking my FM19 system and applying it to Brentford to see if the basic ideas still worked in the game. They did, but the regista was unnecessary and I wanted the attacking midfielder back in the system. The two wide players were not supporting the forward enough either, leaving Toney isolated.

Attempt 2 – Dortmund

A big departure in many ways from the original system.

Starting at the front, the attacking midfielder returned in the shape of an advanced playmaker. I am often guilty of taking out the attacking midfielder in FM because they appear to be unproductive when you look at the stat line. However, when watching games the difference with and without an attacking midfielder is stark. In possession they link everything together. Out of possession, the pressing changes completely, asking too much of the Mezzala, which in turn creates a hole in the centre which the opposition can easily play through.

I tucked the wide players inside to get them closer to the striker and hopefully scoring more goals. With the wingers now tucked in the width would have to come from the fullbacks. Originally these players were complete wing backs, but the positional instructions caused a big problem. The complete wing backs dribbled too much, going round in circles or into impossible situations. What I needed was for the full backs to get high and wide, take a touch and cross the ball. I changed them to full backs to facilitate this.

In central midfield I felt that shifting from two defensive and deep roles would actually offer enough coverage. A central midfielder with a defend duty and a deep lying playmaker should create a box in the centre with the central defenders, allowing the full backs to push on.

It didn’t.

The system showed signs of what I was looking for. Playing forward rapidly and getting into good positions. From here it started to fall away. The deep lying playmaker drifted around far too much and would get too close to the opposition penalty area (despite his individual instructions). The two outside attacking midfielders did get close to advanced forward but were far less effective than I had hoped.

Overall, while the system got decent results I had taken things too far. The fast attacking football was too fast, too rushed, shedding possession without regaining it effectively. I had asked far too much.

Attempt 3 – Real Madrid

A departure in midfield and a less symmetrical style. The passing distances and tempo were changed. I didn’t want to play short and safe, but clearly the settings before were far too long and fast.

I wanted to keep the box in the centre and hoped that dragging the central midfielders back to defensive roles I would keep them away from the opposition area, protecting the central defenders to stop counter attacks.

There is a balance problem in the image above with the left side being completely attacking and the right being locked into support roles. This was changed by putting the left back in a support role and the right back into an attack role.

I still wasn’t satisfied. The gap between the defensive midfielders and attacking midfielders was now too great, though the narrowness of the team was helping the connection between the attacking midfielders and the advanced forward.

What was really bugging me was the big red squares on the grid. People will say that these are only really aesthetic but I didn’t like them. For the next stage I wanted to achieve these things –

A flexible level of fluidity

Pitch coverage

Impact from the players operating behind the striker

Protection of the central defenders

Attempt 4 – Liverpool

This tactic achieves the coverage of the pitch. The roles of the wide players (wings and fullbacks) were vital to achieving this. Starting them inside and then asking them to move out would not achieve the coverage I wanted. Starting them wide but playing narrow, gave me the coverage I wanted.

The striker role changed to a poacher because all I wanted or needed was a player who would be in scoring positions. This could have been a target man, but the poacher role worked slightly better in game.

A key change was shifting the full backs into inverted wing backs. I decided to bring the Mez back in, so felt I needed the inverted wing backs to give protection to the central defenders. Little did I know that this change would have even more of an impact than I had anticipated.

With the two central midfielders the Mez would have the freedom to help in attack with the central midfielder being locked into a deeper, screening and recycling role.

This would mean that when high position had been established on the pitch the team would have four players absolutely committed to attack (poacher, wingers and advanced playmaker) with the Mezzala joining constantly and one of the inverted wing backs joining most of the time. On some occasions both would join. The team attacked with a minimum of six players, sometimes with seven, leaving four or three back. There was also an easy switch available, putting both inverted wing backs into a defensive role, meaning we could keep five players close to the half way line. Attacking with a minimum of six players links with the ideas of Dan Micciche, who was instrumental in the success of the England youth teams in the famous summer of 2017.

When it came down to playing things worked out far better than I expected.

http://www.pger.net/football/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/bandicam-2021-01-28-19-52-48-911.mp4

Playing narrow was perfect. When possession was lost we could counter press easily (in line with the philosophy of Julian Nagielsmann) but it also meant that those wide players did as I wanted, playing like additional strikers. The Mezzala did not get in the box quite like I had wanted, but he didn’t need to. He helped overload the defensive midfielders and became a supplier of assists to Haaland, who was dominant in front of goal.

The biggest bonus was just how effective (to the point of being super powered) the inverted wing backs were. In their support roles they were like having three players. One moment they would be defending like true full backs, then they would be playing central midfielders, then they would be dribbling round the outside like wingers. Their flexibility helped allow other players to function. I have to recognise that I took over the defending champions, with tremendous quality, and signed the best striker in the game, but even then results and style feel way above the norm.

All of this movement occurring within the width of the penalty area overloaded teams centrally. Not only were the central midfielders overloaded, but the central defenders were overloaded too. Large number of goals were scored through quick passing through the central areas.

The tempo was now just right.
